The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.4 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in August 2026, accelerating from a 0.1 percent increase in July. This was primarily driven by a 3.9 percent rise in the gasoline index, which accounted for over one-third of the monthly all items increase. On an annual basis, the all items index increased 3.4 percent, consistent with the 12 months ending July, while the core index (all items less food and energy) rose 2.4 percent year-over-year, slightly down from 2.5 percent in July.
Notable increases included the energy index, up 16.3 percent year-over-year, and airline fares, up 23.4 percent over the last 12 months, with medical care declining 0.2 percent in August.
